There is no single worldwide price for Goethe B1
The cost of Goethe B1 depends on the country, the exam centre, the modules you book and any possible rates for internal or external candidates. Dates, registration deadlines and the availability of individual modules are organised locally as well. A price quoted in a blog or a forum can therefore already be wrong for the next town.
What is binding is the booking page, or written information from the specific exam centre. This article does not give you an invented figure; it gives you a booking process with which you can compare the total price and the conditions properly.
Step 1: put the purpose of recognition in writing
First note down what you need the certificate for: naturalisation, vocational training, work, study, a visa or personal development. Ask the receiving body:
- Is the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 accepted?
- Is a certificate for individual modules enough, or is a complete certificate required?
- Is there a deadline, or a maximum age for the proof of language level?
- Does the result have to be available by a particular date?
These questions matter especially if you only want to retake one module. The Goethe certificate is modular, but the body that checks your proof decides on its own document requirements. If you are still hesitating between providers, use the factual comparison Goethe B1 or telc B1.
Step 2: identify the exam centre and the type of exam
Search the official Goethe website for an institute or a licensed exam centre. Check not only the distance but the exact name of the exam. “B1 course”, “B1 placement test” and “Goethe-Zertifikat B1” are three different things.

Step 3: ask for the real total price
A price overview can show several different amounts: the complete exam, a single module, the price for course participants, the external rate or a late-registration fee. If anything is unclear, ask explicitly:

— What is the full final price for the modules I have selected, as an external or internal candidate, including all compulsory fees?
Also check the costs that do not go to the centre: travel, accommodation if necessary, days off work and a possible second trip to collect your certificate. A date in a distant city is not automatically cheaper just because the exam fee is lower.
Step 4: read the conditions before you pay
The most important clauses are often not printed on the big booking button. Look for answers to these questions:
- Which identity documents are accepted, and do the details have to be entered exactly as they appear in the passport?
- Can I rebook or cancel? Until when, and for what fee?
- What applies in case of illness, and what proof is required?
- When and how do I receive the invitation, the room and the time?
- When are results published, and how do I receive the certificate?
- Are the written modules and Speaking (Sprechen) on the same day?
Save the booking confirmation, the payment receipt and the conditions as a PDF or a screenshot. Hunting through your inbox the evening before is unnecessary stress.
Step 5: choose a realistic date
“As soon as possible” is not always the fastest route to the certificate. If your current level is clearly below the pass mark, a date four weeks later can prevent an expensive retake. Before you book, at least run a short diagnostic in Goethe B1 Reading (Lesen), Listening (Hören), Writing (Schreiben) and Speaking (Sprechen).
Conversely, you should not wait indefinitely once your performance is stable. A fixed date gives your preparation structure. For eight weeks, use the systematic Goethe B1 study plan; with less time, prioritise the modules that carry the greatest risk.
An email template for open questions
Adapt this message instead of sending five separate emails:
Guten Tag,
ich möchte das Goethe-Zertifikat B1 für [Zweck] ablegen und interessiere mich für den Termin am [Datum]. Ich möchte [alle vier Module / Lesen und Hören] buchen. Könnten Sie mir bitte bestätigen, ob diese Module an diesem Termin einzeln angeboten werden, wie hoch der Endpreis ist und wann die Ergebnisse voraussichtlich vorliegen? Außerdem möchte ich wissen, welche Ausweisdokumente am Prüfungstag erforderlich sind.

In English, the template says: you want to take the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 for a particular purpose on a particular date, you want to book either all four modules or specific ones, and you ask the centre to confirm whether those modules are offered individually on that date, what the final price is, when results are expected, and which identity documents are required on the exam day. Replace [Zweck] with your purpose, [Datum] with the date and [Name] with your name.
The template is deliberately specific. The centre can clarify every relevant point in a single reply.
Warning signs when booking
Be careful if a provider does not name the exact exam, promises recognition “everywhere” in general terms, shows no transparent contact details or asks only for informal payment without a receipt. Use the official centre search and verify the provider there.
Another warning sign is time pressure without information: “book today only” is no reason to skip the conditions. The exam is a significant investment. Two extra phone calls are cheaper than the wrong type of exam.
After booking: do this straight away
- Check the spelling of your name and your date of birth on the confirmation.
- Put the registration day, the exam day and the expected result date in your calendar.
- Sort out your journey and, if necessary, accommodation.
- Save the centre’s contact details offline.
- Read the checklist for the Goethe B1 exam day and mark any local special rules.
With that, your registration is not merely paid for but organisationally complete. Your head is then free for the actual preparation.
