How to Prepare for B1 Telc Sprechen? | Tipps und Redemittel

The oral part of B1 Telc Sprechen often makes candidates nervous. You do not only need to know German words and grammar; you also need to speak out loud, stay on topic and react to your partner.

The good news is that preparing for B1 Telc Sprechen does not have to be hard. The main thing is to understand the structure of the exam, learn a few useful Redemittel and practise speaking in simple sentences regularly.

How B1 Telc Sprechen Works

The oral exam has three parts:

  • Teil 1 — Einander kennenlernen
    A short conversation about yourself.
  • Teil 2 — Über ein Thema sprechen
    A short text, a summary, your opinion and an example.
  • Teil 3 — Gemeinsam etwas planen
    Planning something together with a partner.

If you understand in advance what to do in each part, the exam will feel much less stressful.

Teil 1: Prepare Answers About Yourself

In Teil 1 the candidates get to know each other. You usually answer simple questions about yourself and ask your partner similar questions.

The topics are usually standard:

  • name;
  • country;
  • city;
  • family;
  • housing;
  • work or studies;
  • languages;
  • hobbies;
  • free time.

Example answers:

Ich komme aus Indien und lebe jetzt in Deutschland.
I am from India and I live in Germany now.
Ich wohne mit meiner Familie in Frankfurt.
I live with my family in Frankfurt.
In meiner Freizeit gehe ich gern spazieren und höre Musik.
In my free time I like to go for walks and listen to music.

You do not need to memorise a long text. A few short sentences about yourself are enough.

Teil 2: Speak Following a Simple Pattern

In Teil 2 you receive a short text on a specific topic. You should not read it aloud — you need to give the main information in your own words.

A useful pattern for your answer:

topic → opinion from the text → your own opinion → example

Example:

In meinem Text geht es um Gruppenreisen. Die Person findet Gruppenreisen gut, weil man neue Leute kennenlernen kann. Meiner Meinung nach sind Gruppenreisen praktisch, weil man nicht alles allein planen muss. Ich bin schon einmal mit einer Gruppe gereist, und das war interessant.

My text is about group trips. The person thinks group trips are good because you can meet new people. In my opinion, group trips are practical because you do not have to plan everything alone. I have already travelled with a group once, and it was interesting.

You can use this pattern for many different topics: travel, sport, work, family, shopping, transport, health and free time.

Redemittel for Teil 2

To start your answer:

  • In meinem Text geht es um ... — My text is about ...
  • Das Thema meines Textes ist ... — The topic of my text is ...

To pass on information from the text:

  • Die Person sagt, dass ... — The person says that ...
  • Ein wichtiger Punkt ist, dass ... — An important point is that ...

For your own opinion:

  • Meiner Meinung nach ... — In my opinion ...
  • Ich finde, dass ... — I think that ...

For a personal example:

  • Aus meiner Erfahrung kann ich sagen, dass ... — From my experience, I can say that ...
  • Ich habe schon einmal ... — I have already ... once.

Teil 3: Practise the Dialogue

In Teil 3 you and your partner have to plan something together. For example, a party, a trip, a meeting, a present or help for a friend.

Here it is important not to give a monologue. You should have a real dialogue: suggest an idea, ask your partner, agree or suggest a different option.

A simple pattern:

suggest → ask the partner → agree or suggest something else → reach an agreement

Example:

Wir könnten die Party am Samstag machen. Was meinst du?
We could have the party on Saturday. What do you think?
Das ist eine gute Idee. Wo sollen wir feiern?
That is a good idea. Where should we celebrate?
Vielleicht können wir bei mir zu Hause feiern.
Maybe we can celebrate at my place.
Gut, dann kaufen wir Getränke und Snacks zusammen.
Good, then we will buy drinks and snacks together.

In this part it is important to discuss all points of the task: when, where, who does what, what to buy and how much it will cost.

Redemittel for Teil 3

To suggest an idea:

  • Wir könnten ... — We could ...
  • Ich schlage vor, dass ... — I suggest that ...
  • Wie wäre es mit ...? — How about ...?

To ask your partner:

  • Was meinst du? — What do you think?
  • Wie findest du das? — How do you find it?

To agree:

  • Das ist eine gute Idee. — That is a good idea.
  • Damit bin ich einverstanden. — I agree with that.

To suggest another option:

  • Ich würde lieber ... — I would rather ...
  • Vielleicht können wir stattdessen ... — Maybe we could ... instead.

The Main Tip for Preparation

You do not need to memorise long texts. It is better to learn short universal phrases and practise speaking out loud.

For B1 level, simple sentences are enough:

  • Ich finde das gut, weil ... — I think that is good because ...
  • Meiner Meinung nach ... — In my opinion ...
  • Ich habe schon einmal ... — I have already ... once.
  • Was meinst du? — What do you think?

The most important thing is to speak clearly, not to stay silent and to complete the task.
